One of the most important exhibitions in Athens right now is the showing of the George Economou Collection at the Municipal Gallery of Athens (Myllerou and Leonidou, Metaxourgeio)
This exhibition is enormous, both in terms of size but in terms of quality as well (and we are not exaggerating here). A simple listing of the names of the artists exhibited is more than enough to showcase this: Ambrosius Bosschaert II, Gerrit Dou, Eugène Delacroix, Franz von Stuck, Edward Cucuel, Lovis Corinth, Paul Signac, Moritz Melzer, Marie Marevna, Félix Vallotton, Émile Bernard, Alfons Walde, Maurice Denis, Egon Schiele, Raoul Dufy, Louis Valtat, Alexej von Jawlensky, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Max Pechstein, Emil Nolde, Georg Tappert, Otto Mueller, Alfred Kubin, Gabriele Muenter, August Macke, Georges Rouault, Hermann Scherer, Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger, Ivan Kliun, Liubov Popova, Le Corbusier, Ben Nicholson, Françoise Gilot, Lucio Fontana, Kasimir Malevitch, El Lissitzky, Oskar Schlemmer, Marcel Duchamp, George Grosz, Otto Dix, Jack Crabtree, Kees van Dongen, Joan Miró, Paul Delvaux, André Masson, Man Ray, René Magritte, Willem de Kooning, Andy Warhol, Jim Dine, César, Bridget Riley, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter and Georg Baselitz.
Also, drawings of Erich Heckel, Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin, Diego Rivera, Henri Matisse, Amedeo Modigliani, Giorgio Morandi and Lucian Freud.
The collection will be on display until the 24th of April and on the 5th of May, the second part of the collection (!!!) will be exhibited - again, at the Municipal Gallery.
We would to remind at this point, that the building of the Municipal Gallery is an old silk factory, designed by Christian Hansen, brother of Theophil Hansen, responsible for many beautiful buildings in Athens but also in Vienna etc.

In other cultural news: Tchekhov's "Platonov" had its premiere on 9.2 at the National Theatre. Director is George Lanthimos, who is also nominated for an Oscar (Foreign Film) in the upcoming ceremony on 27.2. On that occasion, we wanted to mention his newest project. Info here. (in english)
Also, the premiere of Dimitris Papaioannou newest play "ΜΕΣΑ" (En: "Inside") has been announced to take place on 13.4.2011, at the "Pallas" theatre in Athens. The website for the project is this (in english)
So, that was our cultural round - up for the day!:)
